Build your own online shop (part 1)  E-mail
Discover how to build and run your own online shop. Avoid expensive monthly fees and retain full control over your shop's design with our new series

If you've got a small business - or even an idea for a business - then you need to get yourself an online shop. E-shops are incredibly easy to set up, and after a small initial outlay (as little as £110 including software, or £32 without) can cost under £5 a month to run thanks to cheap web space deals. Now there's no excuse to expand your business to the Web - and in this three-part series we'll show you how it's done.

Level: Intermediate
What you'll learn: Set up hosting for your e-shop; Pick a template for your shop front; Install and start configuring your new e-shop
What you'll need: Web space; Microsoft FrontPage 2003; An Ecommerce template
More information: Microsoft FrontPage; Ecommerce Templates; Online shop created with this tutorial's help

Tools of the trade
You need five things to set up your e-shop. First, some web space - while many ISPs provide a limited amount for free, a better solution is to invest in some paid-for space - check out the box below for three options to look at. For the purposes of this tutorial, it needs to be Microsoft-powered so you can use it in conjunction with Microsoft FrontPage 2003, the second requirement. FrontPage costs £170 (or around £80 as an upgrade from an earlier version - see here).
A domain name makes your site instantly recognisable and easily accessible - www.yourshopname.co.uk looks far more professional than www.isp.com/webspace/yourusername. They're incredibly cheap too - .co.uk domains cost as little as £2+VAT per year, and you can purchase yours at the same time you buy your web space.

Next, you need the shop itself, which comes courtesy of a site template provided by Ecommerce Templates. Finally, you'll need a free Paypal account so you can accept credit and debit card payments online from your customers - go to your localised Paypal site (here) to register for free. We'll cover this in more depth in part two.

Pick the right web host
Web space doesn't have to cost the earth - under £5 a month in fact

There are two key requirements when it comes to picking your web space provider: the package must be on a Microsoft Windows-powered server, and it must support Microsoft Access databases.
We've dug out three recommended packages to look at. The cheapest is Fasthosts - its Windows Home package costs £3.99 plus VAT per month and you can find out more here .
EasySpace offers Platinum hosting for an annual cost of £85 plus VAT - this includes a free domain name. See here for details.
Finally, 1&1's Microsoft Home package costs £5.99 per month (plus VAT) - find out more about it and sign up here.

Set up your web space

Once you've purchased your web space you need to access it. Specific instructions will be available through your web host, but the principle is broadly similar: you log on with a username and password and then you administer all aspects of your hosting through your browser.
When you register a domain name (see the Expert Tip below) you're able to set up multiple email addresses based on that domain, such as This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it We recommend you create different addresses for different parts of your shop, such as one for general enquiries, another for orders and so on.
Setting up email addresses is easy: in 1&1 for example, click E-mail > Create an E-mail Address. Choose the address you want, such as This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , and then choose what to do with email sent to that address. You can either forward it on to an existing email address or set up a dedicated mailbox. If you choose the latter, consult your web host's documentation for the additional settings you'll need to supply in Outlook or Outlook Express.
Finally, make a note of what username and password you'll need in order to access your web space through FrontPage (this will probably differ to the log-on details above) - in 1&1 you'll find this in the Domains section. While here, also make sure that the Microsoft FrontPage Extensions have been activated.

Buy your shopfront
Next, visit Ecommerce templates (click here). This is where you'll purchase the template for your shop. There are two types available: Standard templates start from around £31, while Plus templates cost around £66 or more. Only Plus templates are available through this link.
While the Standard template supports payment through Paypal, it is a heavily cut-down version of the Plus version, which also offers multiple payment options, the ability to view your shop orders online and different postage set-up options. You can always upgrade from a Standard template to its Plus equivalent for £35, but click here for a full comparison of the two first. For the purposes of this series, we'll be using the Plus version.
When browsing for a template, remember that you're looking for a basic look - it's fully customisable as we'll see in part three of this series. Make your selection, pay for it and then download your template using the link provided.

Let's get started
Install Microsoft FrontPage if necessary, then create a folder inside My Documents\My Web Sites called Shop. Open the zip template file you downloaded and copy the installation file on to your hard drive before double-clicking it.
When prompted for a location to save the site to, select the Shop folder you've just created and click Start. The files will now be extracted and you're ready to start setting up your web site.
Open FrontPage and choose File > Open Site. Browse to the My Web Sites folder, select Shop and click Open. Now choose File > Publish Site... Make sure FrontPage or SharePoint Services is selected and type your web address - such as http://www.curly-crafts.co.uk - into the "Remote Web site location" box.
Click OK and if necessary click Yes to create a Web site at the location specified. Next, supply the username and password you made a note of earlier, tick Remember my password unless you're on a shared computer and click OK.
Once the site has been created you'll see a two-paned window - the site's files on your hard drive are on the left, the files on the web server are on the right. Before you publish anything to the web, however, you need to set up a database connection. Choose Tools > Site Settings > Database tab. Click Add followed by Browse and open the fpdb folder and choose vsproducts.mdb. Click OK twice, then click Verify to make sure the connection works. Once the tick appears, click OK.
You're now ready to publish your site. To do so, click the Publish Web Site button and wait.

Customise your shop's regional settings for your own country
1. Download the regional language file
By default, your shop is designed for a US audience, but this can be rectified with the help of some free downloads. Click here and click the Regional language files link to find downloads for many other English-speaking countries (including the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and South Africa), plus a number of European countries. Download the ASP version - if you're like us in the UK, click UK Counties ASP version. Save the zip file to your hard drive, then extract languagefile.asp to your My Documents\My Web Sites\Shop\vsadmin\inc folder, overwriting the original when prompted.

2. Upload files to your shop's server
Now extract updatestore.asp to the root directory of your shop - that's the folder where index.htm is stored (or
My Documents\My Web Sites\Shop\). Open FrontPage and switch to the Remote Web Site view, then click Publish Web Site to upload the two files.

3. Update your regional settings
Now open your web browser and go to www.yourshopname.co.uk/updatestore.asp (where www.yourshopname.co.uk is your shop's web address) and click the Update for UK and Northern Ireland button (or your region's equivalent). Once done, delete updatestore.asp from your
My Documents\My Web Sites\Shop\ folder.

Customise your shop
Once the site has been uploaded and your regional settings applied, close FrontPage. Now reopen your web browser and go to your web address - you should see your site is now online. At present it's just a shell of a site, but before you start changing its look and feel you need to set up the shop's "back end".
The most powerful part of your online shop is its Control Panel, which is where you set up your shop's basic settings, upload your shop's product details and images, plus keep an eye on your shop's orders among other things. Everything is configured through your web browser while you're connected to the Internet, and it's all stored in the vsproducts.mdb database file you configured earlier.

To start setting your shop up, open your web browser and go to http://yourshopname.co.uk/vsadmin/admin.asp (where yourshopname.co.uk is - once again - the web address of your shop). You'll find yourself at the log-in page - type in mystore for the username and changeme for the password, then click Submit. You'll be taken to the main configuration page, from which you can start setting up your shop's basic settings. First things first - change the username and password to protect your shop's settings.
Now you can start working your way through the first three sections: Administration, Product Admin and Shipping Admin. We cover this in more detail in part two, but for now start familiarising yourself with your new shop.
